Project Overview

The US-Mexico Joint Working Committee (JWC) has recognized New Mexico State University (NMSU) in cooperation with the New Mexico Department of Transportation as its center for Border Geographic Information System (BGIS) development.    The JWC is a binational group whose primary focus is to cooperate on binational land and transportation planning and the facilitation of an efficient, safe, and economical cross-border transportation system. The JWC is a coalition of transportation agencies led by the US and Mexican federal governments.  The major sponsors are listed below:

n      US and Mexico Sponsors

¨     FHWA

¨     SCT

¨     State DOT’s-Mexico and US

n      US Cooperating Agencies

¨     US State Department

¨ US Visit

¨     US Customs

¨     Homeland Securityarrow

n      Cooperating Agencies

¨     GSA

¨     New Mexico Border Authority

¨     NAD Bank

n      Mexican Cooperating Agencies

¨ CABN (Customs)

¨     INM (Immigration)

¨     IMT (ITrans. Institute)

Goals

There are three main goals of the BGIS project 1) create a binational GIS dataset to assist in border transportation planning, 2) extend BGIS as a tool for communicating and viewing non-spatial data, and 3) implement a detailed set of GIS data layers to assist in port of entry planning.

Data

The BGIS dataset is comprised of six (6) spatial layers:

n      Road centerlines for

¨     Federal

¨     State

n      Railroad centerlines

n      International airport locations

n      Port of Entry locations

n      Intermodal facilities

n      County/Municipio administrative

      boundaries

NMSU is also working to implement detailed Port of Entry data.  This entails gathering and creating detailed datasets surrounding the POEs for use in land and transportation planning.  These datasets include:

Transport Layers

Land User Layers

Environment Layers

Demographic Information

Resources

NMSU has provided users with two ways of viewing and/or analyzing these BGIS datasets, the Binational GIS Data Viewer and Binational GIS Data Download.

The Binational GIS Data Viewer is a mapping tool designed to help you discover and map binational transportation data.  Using ESRI's ArcIMS software, this tool can locate and display binational transportation routes, major US-Mexico port of entries and land use classifications for four major ports of entries.

The Binational GIS Data Download is a virtual web folder containing binational GIS datasets.  These datasets are intended for the GIS Joint Working Committee members ONLY.  To acquire these datasets you must be supplied with a user name and password.  If you have not received please click here to request one.

Both will be continuously updated as data are created by both US and Mexico participants.
